In my opinion, both reasons must come together. If the piano isn't played anymore, but there is lots of space, it stays, because it looks nice. If there isn't enough space, but it is played, then something else from the home will be dumped.
Maybe a grand is the exception, this can be replaced by an upright to safe some space.
