Let’s not denigrate this tuner. First, he’s not here to defend himself. Second, I may not be accurately relaying what he said or what he intended. Third, you don’t know anything about him but he’s very experienced and I have the utmost respect for him. If he lived near me, I’d be having him tune my piano.
I took his expression of “too clinical” to mean something like just relying on a device and a “numerical” tuning without using your ear. But the other point, in the context of my specific problem with my piano and the previous tuners, was that I was worried that the other tuner had done some kind of unequal tuning but this tuner said not necessarily, that what I might be hearing could actually be a rigidly executed standard tuning aligned only with numbers. He didn’t talk about unisons but probably because he knows I’m not conversant with that terminology.
