I'm sort of surprised that two selected Bechstein -- not because it's a bad piano (it most certainly is not!) but it seems like an outlier, and selecting an outlier requires confidence!
I don't remember which competition it was, but I remember reading somewhere where a person was criticizing the fact that so few people chose the Fazioli, they were saying it was only fear to kept people from it.
I don't know about fear exactly, but I would imagine that far more pianists have access to playing and practicing on S&S pianos (first) and Yamaha (second) than any others, and so it makes sense that people choose the make they're most familiar with.
